1.8 16v kr slow acceleration

Post

Hey guys would appreciate a point in the right direction on this one. Got my mk1 conversion running and idling really well, am having issues with lack of power with acceleration and at times the revs will drop dramatically. The air intake seems to be ok with no leak, and got my mechanic to get the mixture right on the metering head so am assuming its setup correctly.

I still have to replace a core plug and it needs an oil change so dont know if either ofthose two affect it?

And im still yet to fit the overun cut off valve and vacuum switch. Are sorting these things likely to fix this problem or should i be investigating elsewhwere?

Thanks

you should not be lacking power with a 16v conversion. when you say revs drop dramatically is this when you put the clutch in like when down changing or when your accelerating. the valve and switch will help it idle smoother when your driving and stop the revs dropping too fast. have you had the timing looked at? everything needs to be spot on before you do the co mix. also its worth checking the leads are all on in the correct order

as long as you dont have any air leaks the missing over-run valve wont be a problem. all it does is catch the revs at 2k and drops them slowly to idle. if it was fitted id suggest unplugging it as your symptoms sound liek what happens when they go faulty!

Hey, thanks for your input, sorry for my delay in response, been a busy week.

So have had another look at things today, and its safe to say the whole thing is absolutely air tight. So im sure no probs there.

Leads are all in correct order

Vacuum switch is now wired up, but not sure if thats made much of a difference. Over run Cut off valve is plumbed in just not wired up yet.

So i thought id go over my symproms just to clarify if it definitely sounds like i need to spend more time on getting it tuned right.

When i start up engine from cold its very rough (will sometimes cut out) but as it warms up it smooths out and idles at around 950 with no visible rocking or any struggle.

The problem seems to be if i put pedal to the floor it has a delay. from what i see its almost as if its slow to creep up to 1500 but as soon as its over 1500 it shoots up fast.

Does this still sound like its not timed correctly? or is something perhaps at fault?

Sorry for essay!

just check everything as per the link, hopefully you'll find the issue :)

UPDATE:

Figured out that the crankshaft is out of sync by almost half a turn to the cam. No ammount of tweaking the dizzy will help that! Lol

Im assuming this is why im having loss of power?

Is it as simple as im thinking it might be, that i can remove cambelt and manually turn crankshaft to bring the diamond inline and it then being synchronised with the cam?

Any advice and tips?

Apologies! What id MEANT to say was the FLYWHEEL is out of sync with the cam.

yeah just undo the belt and covers, then spin everything till it lines up. use the small punch mark on the flywheel though, not the diamond ;)

but double check the crank is at tdc when the punch mark is lined up, it could be someone bolted it onto the crank wrong! shine a torch down spark hole #1 and look at the piston, or put something like a long thin dowel down the hole while you carefully turn the engine over. when its right at the top check the flywheel and crank pulley marks to see if they're anywhere close

Thanks, so could something like that be a cause for my loss of power?

yeah, if timing is wrong its going to make it slow ;)
