1.6L EG Crankshaft Recommendations

Hello MK1ers,

Here in the US, the EG motor is not fairly common and actually is on of the most rare and expensive motors to build or own. For that reason, there is not much experience floating around when it comes to performance modifications with one.

I'm currently building one and am wondering what's the typical camshaft recommendation for one of these motors? I'd like to run up to a 272, 280 or 288. Can I do this without difficulty?

I've searched with no luck. Also, quick link to my somewhat small build thread or squatter thread: Open letter to OLDSKOOLVWS | VW Vortex - Volkswagen Forum

Thanks.

Regards,
OSVW

Hello,
I just noticed I put crankshaft instead of camshaft :banghead:

Oh well. I am currently in the process of building a 1.6L solid lifter head. Parts here are near impossible to find and I've had much of the parts shipped from Germany. I'd like to install a 272 or 288. Thoughts? Thanks and best regards.

I'd first check to see what you have fitted at present. I believe several different camshafts with different valve timing & lift were used on early engines. On 1.6 litre the camshaft has an additional cast ring on the third cam. Early fuel injected engines used this later camshaft but this was superceded in 12/79 by one with modified timing & can be identified by the letter 'G' between the cams of No 1 cylinder. You may find your existing camshaft is not far off the specs of your 'modified' potential purchase.
