I suspect that is the HT leads on my other car so I will be swapping those for some decent new ones shortly - maybe you should get the HT leads checked on your car?

"Volkswagen officially state all Mk1 Golfs can run on unleaded petrol with a octane rating of 95 RON or higher.
If your Mk1 Golf is a GTi, then using 95 RON unleaded will require the ignition timing to be adjusted as follows:
1.6 (EG) engine 6 deg +/- 1 deg ATDC
1.8 (DX) engine 0 deg +/- 1 deg BTDC
If you modify the ignition timing, you must mark the vehicle with a sticker PN 000 010 007F on the petrol cap/filler.
Using 98 RON unleaded will not require any timing adjustment.
If your Mk1 Golf is not a GTi, you can use 95 RON unleaded wihout any ignition timing adjustment. "
