Wont start for an hour after reasonable run!

88 Clipper that wont start for 40-60 mins after a journey of 20 miles or more.

it's ok on short runs, i seem to get away with about 10 miles.

After longer runs when I turn the key the battery light comes on and nothing. But once it's sat for 40-60 mins starts fine!

we fitted a relay which seemed to work for a bit, well maybe a day or two!

Starts fine cold, I thought it is heat related and last night put some heat shield products over the starter and up the wiring but this morning still the same when i arrived at work. I was not sure that was going to do it anyway after I had put it all on.

Any help Please  :dontknow:  :dontknow:  :dontknow:  :banghead:

possibly the contacts on the starter motor getting warm after a hour running and sticking (expanding) then when they cool down they shrink again and it starts fine

possibly this . . . well it was same symptoms on my air cooled 72 beetle and it was this problem

Is the alternator charging the battery?

If not, running the car could be winding the battery down.
Had a similar problem on my escort. Would start again after a while due to the battery getting a slight charge back

Try sticking a multimeter on the battery when engine off and engine on, should be 11-12volts when off and 13-14 when on. If not then could be drive belt slipping or fault alternator wiring?

Happened to my escort anyway

What they said - get the battery and alt tested, then check and clean the connections for the big earth cable - clean them up - there's two.

All that's for free - then change the starter.

Cheers

p.s. We have starters :)

Just been down that same road, new starter fixed the problem. But fingers crossed on a summers day, it turned out on mine that Rad was also blocked and really bad flow. Water pump was also on last legs so replaced, 100% perfect…… in that area now !

Might have just been the contacts to the starter, clean them up with alcohol and i use a pcb rubber.
