Yeah I thought it looks wrong, done up massively over torque aswell got to get the last bolt out that's rounded off nowmark1gls said

A little dot of copper grease on the new bolts will stop them seizing on and makes taking it off when you change the cambelt a lot easier.

ahh I see, well these washers were uneven so I think that's the problem, yeah gonna grease them all and was considering changing the crank ones to bolts with heads like thismark1gls said
When I changed my water pump for a new one it sat a little to the left compared to the old one so the pulley did rub the plastic cover a little so perhaps that is why yours has some washers behind it?

Having seen other engines with regular headed bolts fitted this was my plan thanks for the infomark1gls said
My 1978 Mk1 Scirocco has "normal" socket/spanner head bolts on the water pump and the crank, and on the Golf I have allen key head bolts on both so I guess you will be fine to swap them over.
