Wonky pulleys

Post

Has anyone experienced this fault? On my 1.8 ex clipper the water pump & crank pulley are wonky you can watch them moving as they spin. I'm doing the whole engine bay over winter and going to do the cambelt and waterpump aswell, they had washers behind them is this correct fitment? Hope it's something silly like this and not major. I've bought all new pulleys to fit also (once I can get the last rounded crank pulley bolt out…)

Yeah I thought it looks wrong, done up massively over torque aswell got to get the last bolt out that's rounded off now

When I changed my water pump for a new one it sat a little to the left compared to the old one so the pulley did rub the plastic cover a little so perhaps that is why yours has some washers behind it?

A little dot of copper grease on the new bolts will stop them seizing on and makes taking it off when you change the cambelt a lot easier.

ahh I see, well these washers were uneven so I think that's the problem, yeah gonna grease them all and was considering changing the crank ones to bolts with heads like this image.jpeg

My 1978 Mk1 Scirocco has "normal" socket/spanner head bolts on the water pump and the crank, and on the Golf I have allen key head bolts on both so I guess you will be fine to swap them over.

Having seen other engines with regular headed bolts fitted this was my plan thanks for the info
