which valve depressor tool ?? quick answer needed (83 1.5L)

i have an 83 golf 1.5L

which one of these valve depressor tools do i need to change the shims?
do i need the post 83 one?
i think the head i got is from a pre-83 us car.. but it's the same as mine.

which one??

i'm thinking 2574

If the head's off the car, I'd use the traditional valve spring compressor. You don't need a wide reach one for an 8V (you do for 16V though). Those tools are for doing the job in the car, ie another tool which is used not so often but offers a timesaver.

right the head is off but i have the cam in to check the clearances.

so the traditional style doesn't seem like it would work for me.

Apologies, misread it and didn't realise you're just doing the shims. I thought you were doing the valve stem seals.

nope.. the head i bought is port/polished.. new stem seals and guides.. and big valves

so all that is left is checking the shims.. and i need the cam in for that.

so basically with the head off either one should work?
the shape is only based on stuff interfering in the enginebay?

The tool I've got looks more like the first one, the second one looks too wide.

I think you'll find thats the right one, I haven't got any shim pliers and they're something I must buy. I justify the cost of any tools by comparing the price with what I hear others have spent on their cars in garages.
Cheers.

good point.

i didn't think i would need the pliers.. simply pry up the shim with a pick.

If the pliers aren't too expensive I'd be tempted to get them, the shims can be sods to get out, or they can in my experience anyway. If you've got a compressor another way to get them out is to blast air into the notch where the pliers fit, they should pop out, the downside is you also get sprayed in oil.
