which carb have i got?

my 82 1.5 cabrio has a carb. but which one? it needs attention i reckon as the car pops and bangs if you rev it and let the revs drop back down. its not the best starter and idles at about 300 to 400 rpm.
what can i do to make my car run perfectly  :dontknow:

When you mean 'pop's an bangs' do you mean from the exhaust as in a misfire?
That could be timing belt, I think.

A low rpm, yes that may well mean your idle speed needs to be adjusted an I'm sure that's to do with the carb.

What's your engine code? As an example I have an 1.8 EX carb engine, this would have used a pierburg which i think is also known as a solex/zenith carb or even a weber but that's a mod I think.

Sorry to not fully answer the question but I'm not really an expert. I do have a Haynes manual for the pierburg/solex/zenith, an I might be able to tell you how to adjust the idle speed an what not an maybe the timing, but it could be slow going if we both don't have the required experience if you get me.

Kind regards,
Didge

yeah the bangings in the exhaust. would the timing also affect the engine speed? im not clued up at all and have 2 different manuals for it but find them hard to follow.

il find the engine code and get a picture up of the carb

cheers so far

Cambelt timing I don't think will effect the speed of a running engine, timing is more to do with when an which valves would be opening an closing along which piston cylinder is being fired.

I'd say it's stll a combo of the timing belt an the carb settings.
I think if your facing the engine bay/carb with the filter off the idle screw might be on the lower left hand side. I'll see if I can find an Image of a pierburg carb for you on google.. Brb.

Right, I've just found an expaned image which was provided by rubJ he always know what he's talking about hers the link: http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=61457

see where this gets you, as if you can raise the enine speed then you can find out if the timing is better, see because the engine is running at such a slow rate the engine might be just backfiring because of fuel hanging around an that it's not burning proper.

Hope this helps,
didge
