What Spares / Service Items

Post

As a Newbie both to the forum here and to VW Golf ownership, please forgive me for asking what for many of you, must be the obvious…but…

I use my auto '90 Clipper as my daily driver and with winter fast approaching, I'm looking to give it a service…

what exactly does that entail though? Obviously, I'll be changing the oil and air filters and probably the ancient looking ignition leads, but what other bits of the car need routine maintenance and what should I be looking for?

What spares should I have in my car? Dizzy cap for example…

Thanks in advance

Other service items spark plugs, rotor arm, dissy cap, fuel filter, alternator belt and a new sump plug washer.
Spares to carry - Pop the old HT leads, spark plugs, rotor arm, dissy cap, alternator belt in the boot as they was working when you took them off and OK for spares.
Get your self a Haynes manual as that tells you when and how to change the parts.

If you have not got your oil filter yet it's best to get a VW filter and good oil 10W40 semi synthetic
You can get the oil and filter here or give your VW dealer a call

Big thanks for such a great reply - nothing too involving then really - It appears that I do however need to identify what type of distributor I have… I've a car from the 60s and that needs a lot more at service time - suspension and prop shaft greasing for example etc so this short list is very refreshing :)Thanks again.

Depending on the age/mileage you can look at replacing the cam belt as well, a visual inspection will reveal cracking/perishing of the belt.

Thanks - the cam belt was done last year but I will have a looksie at it just to make sure all is well…had a belt fail on an Alfa a few years ago (company car thankfully!) and I don't fancy introducing the pistons to the valves…

Any idea how to identify what type of dizzy the car has - looking at the spares website, various types were fitted…Bosch or Ducellier/Valeo…

If you have a photobucket.com account or simular take a couple of pictures of the dissy and dissy cap upload it to photobucket and copy the IMG code and paste it into your post and we should see the picture.
The other couple of things to check before the winter is the fuel filler neck, take the cap off and shine a torch inside to look for any holes/rust as you don't want water and dirt getting into the fuel, and do you have a good quailty battery?
