Haynes should give the correct grade, I think its 15w50, which i've used in all my golfs in the past - generally labeled as for older cars

I use Quantum SJ Multigrade (15/40) available from GSF at about ?8.50 for 5 litres and VW approved.

Anyone tried semi/fully synthetics?  :dontknow:

You should drink more water.
1664 is 95% water.
Drink more beer? :)

i'm using semi pathetic 10w40 oil in my clipper just now, i've not long bought the car and the guy i had bought it from was using fully synth in it and one of the hydraulic tappets took ages to fill up and since i've put the semi in it it seems to fill up quicker but not sure if it's just coincidence from changing the old oil or what but semi synth is a better oil to just standard mineral oils.

IainG - I agree that semi-syn's are better than minerals but I was wondering about fully synthetics (esp. PAO)? Much better thermal stability/resistance to oxidation/shear stabilty/etc (BTW I work for BP Marine Lubes   ).
Anyone tried fully synthetic?

depends on state of your engine, its no good buying better (semi or full synthetic stuff)  if your engines old and worn and burning it away, in an ideal world 10/40 as its thinner and gets round your engine faster (again depending on wear and tear) but older, high milage engines (using oil, smoke when cold) just be ultra careful when they are cold and use thicker stuff or get a new bottom end, if you are 'topping up' all the time on better oil summats not right. guess its one of them try it and see jobs   like the annoying squeaks    worth changing frequent tho if you are gonna keep the car for a bit
