What next?

I have a 1.6 mk2 driver engine fully rebuilt with twin 40's on a rebuilt 1.8 mk1 head and a 4-2-1 manifold. follow this link -  http://spaces.msn.com/oldscool/PersonalSpace.aspx?

It has been dyno'd at 105bhp with 102 lb of torque. my mate has a 175 bhp clio and has challenged me to a drag. now me being a vw boy i dont want to let the team down and get completly embarrased. i have 4 months to 'refine' my car so what next? cams, balanced and lightened bottom end, gas flowed head? any suggestions other than Nitrous are welcome. but i need to know where to put the work first. i want to wipe the smile from his face. THe cars stripped with buckets and lowered on coilovers on 8x14s. i know i can never make 175 but just to get with in a second or 2 of his time would be nice.

Thanks Dan

all of the above would help, but as you say you'll never hit 175bhp from your 1.6. The advantage you have is weight and you'll need to save every bit you can. Thing is you will be only a few seconds behind but to decrease this time is very difficult.
The ratio goes…….
To go twice as fast you need eight times the power
You can work it out from that how much power you need to gain a few seconds on a 16second quarter etc

a 2.0 bottom end and a closer ratio gearbox than driver/cl/gl would help, and a 8 valve cam mate, but you aint gonna keep up with a clio 172' (just hope it breaks  ).  the gearbox makes loads of difference though.  next step would be injection engine in my eyes, mk2/mk3 cheap and plentiful, i have had a few of them single carbed webered 2.0 engines with mk2 1800 carb head and they were nippy, tough as nuts as well and good on juice, so your head and carbs on a good 2.0 bottom end with closer ratio box would fly like.  dont forget clio has electronic aids that unfortunately we dont :( at the end of the day you have a mk1 golf and not a clio, and your car looks the nuts like :D

What power

So if i changed the bottom end for a 2.0 and the cam what sort of BHP and torque figures should i be expecting? Also is the 9a engine your refering to? and what gearbox?
Thanks

'9A' is the gearbox not engine reference. 9A boxes were fitted to all (?) MK1 1.8 Gti's on the DX engine.

I think there is also a 9A engine block? :dontknow:

Early 1.8 DXs had g/b codes 7G, with very slightly different ratios than later Campaign 9As.

Hows that for VW anorakium?

Gear ratio site might be of some help, not every box code is there though (020 isn't for example)

020 refers to the gearbox type (020 = a rod-change 5-speed), whereas codes like 9A & 7G refer to the gearbox model (ie: the exact ratio-set for each car body/engine/sales market combination)

PS: to be sure of wiping the floor with the Clio, fit the 1.8T engine 8)
