what is this?!

okay so i have a 1982 golf gl 1457cc with a weber carb.
just taken my engine out to get the car resprayed, disconnected everything fine identified all the different lines, wires etc. except this one!! what's the black thing pointed to by the red arrow in my pic?? disconnected the line to it but have no idea what it is. can't find it in the haynes manual either as a last resort. it can't be the fuel line as you can just see that in the top left of the pic next to where the carb is. but it is like a second fuel line.. any ideas guys? thanks, charlotte x

Think thats an air / fuel seperator. they have one on a mk 2 golf carb but that version is metal, I have one of the metal air / fuel seperators fitted to my 1.6 carb.

Charlotte,
It is what andy said and 100% plastic.
Comes on 1.3 (Big Block) citi golf south african, Mk1 1.5, MK1/2 1.6 & 1.8 carb models
If you have had rust issues, fuel filler neck rusting etc, rust small pieces in the tank will get into the lines and travel to this part.
I am sure/positive if you disconnect the separator and tilt it, tapping it you will get pieces of crap come out.
It is bolted to the rocker cover via 1 x 10mm rocker cover .
You can get plastic replacements but i preferre the newer updated metal version and replaced on both my golf's to the mk2 metal type which is bolted down to the same area but 2 x rocker nuts hold it.
If your happy as regards rust issue being solve din the past, you can of course leave it, but probem with these is you can not open them to look inside and i would suggest buy a replacement just in case any crap carry's through to the carb.
Pete
