What engine would I possibly have?

HI! This is my first post. I have recently purchased a 1980 Rabbit for 50usd, yes I am from the US, and have became really interested in repairing it and restoring it to its original state. The problem is that the badge on the back says it is a diesel L but it has a gasoline/petrol engine. I was wondering what engine it would have in it. Would it be a 1.8 8v? Hi and welcome to the site . I know that in the US you had 1.5, 1.7 and 1.8 petrol engines - not sure about diesel, think VW only made a 1.5, 1.6 and 1.6 turbo. You need to find out whether someone has stuck a petrol engine in a diesel car or a diesel badge on a petrol car. Is there any paperwork etc that would detail the original engine? You may also still have an option code sticker still inside the boot?
