What engine have I got as there is some confusion!

My car is suppossed to be a 1.6cc GL

I have not had the car long. When I bought it I checked the engine code was the same as on the log book, which it was. The Vin number was also the same on the car as the log book. I was cleaning my engine today and noticed the bottom block has 1.8 written on it. It is cast into the engine just like all the engines are. The thing is my car is supposed to be a 1.6 GL. So I am confused as to why it has 1.8 written but the engine code on the top part of my engine is the one that is supposed to be for a 1.6cc as that is what is written on my log book. What is going on here? Can a bigger block be possibly fitted to the 16 engine? Thanks in advance

The blocks are the same, VW used the same casting for both 1.8 and 1.6 just bored to a different size.

Thanks mate for the reply. So that means all 1.6 engines will have 1.8 written on them? Ok. Is it also possible my engine could be bored out as it did get an engine rebuild in the past by a previous owner. Is it possible to get the 1.6 engine a little more powerful? Perhaps like the 1.6 Gti.
Thanks

as above, the later 1.6 carb block has the same casting as the 1.8, so this is why it has 1.8 on the back. the difference is down to the crank and pistons though, not the bore. so you could swap 1.8 pistons and crank into your 1.6 block to make it a 1.8 ;)

pointless though really when you could just fit a 1.8 block instead, will save you honing the bores and buying new piston rings etc
