What engine do I have?
Hi
I got sold my car as a 1.5 carb. Its definatly a carb. When putting some carb cleaner down the peirburg the other day I spotted it said 2B on the top and know that wasnt right. Got underneath the car and looked at the bottom end above the sump at the back as a neighbour told me and it says a 1.8. Ive just cleaned up the cylinder block and it says EW 03485 or 034S5; which from what I can find is a rocco 1.6. The cylinder head shows 26 026103373Q.
My neighbour had a look at the end of the gearbox and as it was green said he recons its a 1.8.
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks
David

EW is 1.6 carb engine from a golf cabrio, caddy or scirocco.
Green gearbox - do you mean the end plate on the 5th speed? Way to vague to say all 5 speed boxes came from cars with 1.8 engines, the best way of checking is to look at the gearbox code, which is on the underside of the bellhousing. Then look at the gear ratio guide on the left, to check what its from etc.

Its a 1.5 cab 1986 reg 'C Plate' on the V5
Im guessing / hoping its a 1.8 as the bore size on a 1.6 and 1.8 are the same and the stroke is different? Is this correct?

Volkswagen never did a 1.5 cab in 1986, they changed to the 1.6 in around 1982-1984 or so.
1.8 is a different bore and stroke to 1.6

1.8 cast on the block doesn't mean its 1.8 capacity…….

yeah the later 1.6 blocks were actually 1.8 blocks!
Bore is the same between later 1.6 and 1.8 engines, as the block is the same. the pistons and crank were changed to reduce the cc. stroke is different though
