What engine can be put in my Clipper?

I'm a bit of a newbie and have searched the forums and read a lot of topics, but thought I'd still ask anyway.

My '92 Clipper needs a new engine. The carburettor has flooded the engine with oil and basically ruined it (thats what a garage in Caerphilly told me) so I need to replace the engine.

Would this be suitable:

Alternatively, what other engines could I put in it? How much money is it likely to cost? (I just want my car to run again, so nothing fancy!)

Thanks!

Try another garage? Whats up with the existing engine? Is it worn out, smoking and running rough or did it expire with a bang?

The pierburg 2e2 carbs are notorious for playing up and causing allsorts of starting and running problems but the basic engine is usually OK.

The ebay engine is an injected version so won't fit without lots of other bits and extra work. Also without hearing and seeing it running it might more fkd than yours :dontknow:

If the original is U/S then find a late 80s/early 90s MK11 Golf/Jetta or Scirocco with a 1.8 carb engine, lots in scrapyards and a direct replacement.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Basically the engine cut out and would not restart. The AA towed me to a garage my dad recommended, telling them that it was likely to be a carburettor or fuel problem.
The garage have basically said that the carburettor keeps flooding the engine with oil, which has washed the balls (bores?) out of the engine. They say the engine is pretty much f**ked and I should scrap the car (to them for ?100!).

dont scrap the car!
you aint said what miles the car has done or what nick it was in before it died…. was it burning oil?
that engine u posted would be no good for your car unless you wanna get stuck in like.
sounds like your piston rings are borked (from a rough guess) is it blowing oil up into carb and not starting?.
try and find a mk2 golf 1.8 driver, gl engine, if you are stuck get a 1.6 driver/cl engine cheap and plentiful. if u can go look at at engine thats running that helps loads. wont be much more than 100 quid for a good engine.
your cars worth a lot more than 100 quid mate, go to another garage.

The engine's done 116000 miles. It didn't seem to use much oil.
There were times when I'd be driving on the motorway and there'd suddenly be a drop in power, so I'd have to drop down a couple of gears, but that only happened maybe 3 times and it would always been fine after a few minutes.
Any ideas?

Sounds like someone at the garage is looking for a very very very cheap Cabby!!  8O And then they wonder why no-one likes going to a garage. Don't get butt F@&%$^ by em. It's worth 5 x that with no engine!!!

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o
