IMHO your mechanic is not wrong.

Depends if you want to retain an automatic choke - then a new pierburg or a refurb kit will sent you on your way (Crazyquiffs again)

if you go the manual choke route, the Weber is the way to go - very reliable (there is a removable cover plate in your dash where the manual choke lever goes).  In Traceys cab (weberised) , I got a replacement Handbrake Warning Light off of Evil bay which also included a Choke warning light (from early manual choke small blocks)…these come up from time to time.  To the cable I fitted a warning light switch from Rimmers

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-137607

which switches said warning light on when the choke is out.  If you have a wonderful memory (IIRC I don't have!!) and you can remember to push the choke back in after you warmed up the engine and maybe gone a mile or three you won't need this (b*gger to fit anyway, you need to disconnect the battery and remove the instrument panel/disconnecting the speedo drive to get at the switch attachment grubscrew.

Wires go from an ignition switched live feed to the warning light to the switch…which is earthed (bung a fuse in the feed if it hasn't already got one in circuit)
Cheers

According to my book of words, the tuning procedure is

a) get the engine warmed up, then set the revs to 850 using the Idle Stop screw (the one staring at you which bears on the throttle cam where the cable fits.

b) move to the Idle mixture screw (access is on the Off-side of the carb, submerged in the body casting and it points in a transverse direction - towards the nearside wing) - its at the lower left hand side (near the front of the carb when your standing at the front of the car looking towards the rear).

Adjust this screw - one way or the other - until you get the fastest idle speed (should be more than 850 rpm!)

c) go back to the Idle Stop screw and slow the engine back down to 850 rpm

d) go again to the Idle mixture screw and try to find the fastest idle speed greater than 850 rpm.

repeat c) and d) until you never get an idle speed greater than 850rpm - then you're done.

As Paul says, you could have the wrong Jets but we need to know the exact model/engine size/type to find out what the recommended jets are:::there are different jets depending on 1.6 or 1.8 engines, Manual or Automatic Transmissions.

If this does't work, use you yellow pages to find a weber specialist - he'll have it sorted in double quick time but it would be a good idea to do a quick service on your car first - new plugs, rotor arm etc.

Sorry Ganch

Tune-up details only apply to 32/34 DMTL  Weber - not familiar with the tuning process for a 1B3 (except to swap it for the equivalent Weber (LOL)
