Weber carb

I am having trouble with my standard carb on a 1800 clipper cab. After 10 miles the car seems to be overfueling and blowing black smoke out the exhaust when I floor it. Power is lost and the car splutters. I park up, turn the car off then back on again, and it drives ok for the rest of my journey. Any help on what is causing this would help.:banghead:
Also, what is the direct replacement in the weber range and what else do I need to fit it, etc.

Have you checked the obvious, like fuel filter etc? Any crud in the fuel tank?

Yes I serviced fully the other day, new plugs, leads, fuel filter etc etc etc. I cleaned out the fuel sender in the tank, it was fine, no blocking etc. All seems ok, it is just when I go on motorways after 20 miles I grind to a halt. I stop, hit the 'autochoke' bit on the side with a screwdriver and set off again it is fine for another 20 miles or so.  Any help would be appreciated.

Next time it does it, take off the air filter and have a look at the choke flap. If it's closed then the autochoke is the problem, if it's completely vertical (i.e open) then it could be carb icing. Have a look at the flap in the air filter breather hose. It should be directing air from the back of the engine. There should be a vacuum hose coming from the back of the carb to the air filter unit which supplies vacuum to move the flap in cold weather.
