those bolts are often bad , last one i eventually got the pulley held with an oil filter wrench , sometimes bolts snap off too

I used two Allen keys to hold against one while loosening the other then you can whack a screwdriver in the free hole to stop pulley spinning. Soak em first.

I got new bolts from VW the other day. I think they were about 30p each. As for getting the pulley off, I'd removed the whole water pump, gripped the pulley in my workmate, used an extender (wheel wrench) on my allen key and all three cracked off without too much effort.

You kinda need a pulley puller, it makes the job easy. For the bolts, the easiest way is an impact gun but so long as you can somehow hold the pulley from turning, should be ok. Make sure you clean out the heads of the bolt holes and get the relevant tool fully in, to prevent rounding them off. If that does happen, then grind 2 flats into either side of the head and use a spanner on it instead.

ive used waterpump pliers in the past, its fiddly though especially if you're on your own:

there is a proper tool for this though its got a handle and a triangular hole in it to go over the 3 bolts, like this though this one is a bit steep:

the double allen key trick works too
