Was running, just died, now won't start!?

Hi people! I was fixing my girlfriends car(freelander) today and when it came to starting it I needed to jump it as the battery was dead so I started my golf, which I was driving yesterday, and I moved it into position to fit the jump leads but realised wasn't close enough so I went to get back in the golf to inch it forward and before I even got to the door the car just died, no spit, splutter or struggle, just died, so I turned the key to start again and it's not firing at all, just turns over and over with not even the slightest of fires! I didn't have time to do any real investigating but I have plenty of fuel and everything on the carb side of things are all good as recently serviced this whole area so it must be electrical in my opinion, all my fuses and relays look to be good but that's as far as I've looked! Day off tonortow so will have a better look, anyone got any ideas of what it could be?

Thanks for any info
