At dies when hot

Hi all

Just got myself a 1.6 automatic petrol golf gl mk1.

When I got it the car wouldn't run but would run with fuel put into the carb so took the carb apart and the jet at the bottom when you split the carb was completely blocked so I blew it out with a compressor and put it all back together and it ran fine, drove it around for about 10 mins and it started to die and then cut out and wouldn't start.

After leaving it for a bit the car started and ran fine until it got hot and then cut out again.

Any help would be much appreciated

I just bought a 1988 Karmann 1.8 Mk1 softtop and I had a similar problem. My car konked out a few times when sitting in traffic and I found the car to be running quite hot. But I noticed that once moving the engine cooled and the car seemed to be fine. But his kept happening so I checked the coolant and it was filthy with oil.
So I flushed the coolant and the radiator with water until there was clear water flowing out the bottom hose of the radiator and refilled the coolant. I ran the car again and the coolant was immediately filthy again. This tells me that oil is getting into the coolant which means it's the headgasket that's gone so I've just orderd a head gasket set and new oil filter which I hope should od the trick and give my car a new lease of life.

This maybe worth checking for your car too and is a very easy and cheap check to do!

I'll let you know how I get on!

Gordon.

The oil in the water could also be the water feed oil cooler has rusted away inside so the water and oil are mixing?
Common problem if the coolant does not have right mix with antifreeze.

Edit- Just re-read your post and if the car is getting really hot then most likely the head gasket but always worth checking the oil cooler first
Looks like this and the oil filter screws onto it

How easy is it do you know to take out the engine oil cooler?
