twin webers on a 1.8 clipper

Hi All,

I am thinking of upgrading my pezzi pierburg and was intending on swapping the current carb out for a nice set of DCOE 40s.  I know I need to upgrade the manifold, but what else do I need?

Anyone got a DIY sticky for this conversion?

Thanks,

Natalie.

PS any comments would be widely appreciated, particularly from those who have done the conversion.

Hello Natalie and anyone else reading this…

I'm guessing that you are meaning a Carb conversion for an 8v Engine?

Currently I am in the process of my second carb conversion on my clipper, I'm going to swop my single 40 DHLA dellorto to a pair of  40 DHLA dellorto's, so hopefully I can help.

You will need a pair of matched carbs, manifold, linkage (?50), electric fuel pump, fuel filter and electronic fuel pump (facet or similar) and a couple of 6mm-8mm couplings for the fuel lines as VW use 6mm and everything else is 8mm internal diameter. ( I think that's most of it )

First you will need the right manifold for your carbs, I have a Rowland one, I believe it is a short version. Clearance to the firewall is tight with twin carbs, I think I have about 80mm with mine, enough to run rampipes and filter

On the conversion it's self, getting the original manifold off is awkward, I ended up cutting half of mine off to get to the mounting bolts. The exhaust manifold gets in the way. You may need to remove the exhaust manifold to mount the inlet as there is no space to get spanners in.

Secondly you will have a hole left in the cylinder head when you have removed the OEM carb set up. This is for water flow through the OEM manifold. This will need either some sort of pipe connector fitting or in my case just filling up with a large blob of metal putty stuff ( from loctite ). And before enyone shoot's me down it work's fine blocked off! You will also need to blank off the return to the metal waterpipe  that runs round the engine, 16mm alloy blanking plug  should do this. (e-bay)

Finally the fuel pump needs to be uprated as the mechanical one is not up to the job. I have a facet pozi flow at present, but I'm not sure it will be big enough for the twin 40's. I'm not sure how to wire the feed for this properly…. I have hard wired mine as I can't find an ignition feed that stays live when the engine is started, this is not ideal to say the least! does anyone know where such a feed can be found???

I hope that helps and doesn't put you off the carb conversion!

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.
