I went thru these same questions and in the end got rid of the car as it's just not worth the hassle. Fuel system needs changing as do some of the electrics then there's suspension and braking.

I was once toying with this idea to be advised why build something you can buy, which TBH can't be argued with. Take it you're looking for more oomph under your right foot? In which case the cost, time and effort spent trying to drop a Gti lump in may be better spent by getting a nice carb set up which will give you more ooomph but less headaches and may in the long term work out cheaper, and you'll have something that's 'a bit different'. Especially if the car itself is a good 'un. Have a search through threads and there's plenty of ideas and advise. I know carbs4ever did a fantastic resto and had a great carb set up on it and I don't think that was sluggish at all

Have a look at the two links. First one is the question you asked and the second is regarding putting twin webers on   Hope they're of some use.

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

I was contemplating (still am) simply changing the Head for a GTi, full exhaust, then bike carbs on it, possibly bit of flow work on the head and 4-2-1 ans proper system, properly set up would give good gains i recon.

Cost £300-400 max, maybe £250 if you really try.

Power, i think 120bhp-130 possibly.

And plus you'd get an awesome sound on WOT!

But also contemplating LPG conversion which means i'd have to keep my webber, but no reason i can't do the rest but with lower gains.
