If its a standard carburettor, it will have an automatic choke. The good news is, it seems to be working perfectly, since you aren't reporting any cold running issues! I have a 1.6 with Weber carb, and manual choke. The engine will not start or run without the choke, on a cold start.

You sould be able to get a manual choke conversion if your auto choke is kaput.  There is a place in the dash for the cable.
