To add upgraded Cams or not to add upgraded Cams?

Post

Evening all, I have a Mk1 running 6A bottom end and KR head on twin carbs. Head has been ported and polished running Ashley 4 branch.

Is it worth upgrading the KR cams to aftermarket fast road cams? Has anyone seen decent power gains and what were these like? How did the engine perform….Or am I better spending money else where? Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks

The KR likes to rev and produces it's power up high in the rev range. If you add aftermarket cams they will give you more power but further up the rev range and you'll lose some power down low.

Depends if that suits your driving style?

Cheers

Thanks Paul. Sounds good and would suit.

I like how the KR drives currently. I guess the more power/quicker the better and whether the cams would also be a good return on investment compared to say going turbo..?

Turbo will always give you more power but it's a different type of power. There's a slight lag when you put your foot down whilst driving but there's lots of power, sometimes too much.

I'm building up my MK1 with a 2.0 16v (9a bottom end with ABF head and cams). It will run twin 40's because I don't want mega horsepower. I want something that will be quick without wheelspinning everywhere in the wet or a constant threat to my driving licence.
