Timing Marks Mixed info on forum

Settling In
Hi,
I fitted a timing belt on My Mk1 cabby some time ago, since then it has had a rough Idle.
I Lined the camp pulley up to the top of the valve cover as shown in this pic below.
Since then I have been told the dot should line up with the top of the head??
Could someone talk me through the procedure of checking the timing.
I need to remove the plastic plug on the gear box but don't have the correct tool.

yeah you often see it incorrectly posted that the dot should be lined up with the rocker cover, it 100% should be lined up to the head surface with cover and seal removed:
