The engine in my Cabby.. **HEAD GASKET**

Well, the bloke i bought my car from, we helped him swap an engine from a tintop into my cabby.

My cabby WAS a 1982 1.4l GL Auto.

The engine that's in it now is a 1.6l Manual (assuming that's what the 1.6l means that is cast into the front of the engine).

We can't remember kind of golf it came out of, all i know we traveled miles and it was silver :D

We need to know what year that would have been? It's deffo 1.6, but in 1982 they didn't seem to make a 1.6 petrol, only 2 diesels…. (According to my retro handbook)

Anyway, hopefully tomorrow i'm going to GSF cheltenham in the morning to get a new head gasket, and we need to know which one to get, apparently there are two different ones (GSF website).

We've already got the head off if it's any difference, and it looks like the oil has got into the cylinder, because there is oil on a part of the gasket, and there is a white residue on top of the piston..

Anyway…. What is my engine?? Guesses?? Photo's needed??

75bhp 1.6l carb 7/77
85bhp 1.6l carb 12/83
GTI/GLi 1.6 card 7/82

I don't think it's the GTI, because i would have remembered ripping apart a GTI… however it's possible…

Anyway, i'll get some pictures up here sharpish, is there anyway to say that's not the GTi engine?

Thank you eternally in advance :D,

Thomas

The engine was probably a 1457cc engine, ie described normally as a 1.5, not a 1.4. They certainly did 1.6 petrol engines too, it will be 1588cc. To properly know which one, the best way to tell is to look at the engine code, its stamped on the block just in front of the engine number. You might have to scrape away rust/dirt/oil/grease from the area to reveal it.

Also, what year car did the 1.6 come from? And for that matter, what model, etc?

We don't know that is the problem. I was a rather quick process, we did everything in a matter of hours and he drove it to work the next day.

I'll have a look.

I'll be taking the existing gasket to GSF and see if they know.

I'm back bearing news :D

However it's not the news i was expecting…

I hope there aint any cut and shutters / cloners on this forum…

This is what i found on the main block…

(Big VW Logo) JB 635 629 (Small VW Logo)

Apparently JB means a scirocco 1457cc carb MK2 81' - 85' 70BHP……

I am really confused!!

It could obviously mean that they both used the same engines so that it is a 1.5l…

But why does it say 1.6 on the front of the top end? Very strange……..

Please confim that if it is a 1.5l that there is only one head gasket available.

Thanks, and sorry for the excessive use of the…. LOL

1.5 and 1.6 blocks were both stamped 1.6, so there's no strangeness here. I don't know the exact reason, but I imagine its because the blocks are externally identical/so similar that the parts are interchangeable at a certain point in manufacture. Then they are bored to slightly different amounts.

Sorry and i really appreasate the knowledge i've learn, such as my car is 1.5 not 1.6! That should help with the insurance :D

And i'll be able to pass it of as a 1.6 :D :D :D

Thanks Paul!

Only to someone who doesn't look at the V5 if they bought it, or didn't know their engine codes and that the 1.5 blocks are stamped 1.6……
