Have you fitted the alternator on the correct side of the bracket ?
Yes then you need to look at the bottom crank pulley does this line up with the water pump ? Yes ? Then its the alternator thats the problem . And may be in correctly fitted or the wrong one for your new application .
Can you take some pics mate ? Better advice can then be offered .

lookd at a mats mk1 and found the pully on the water pumps are diffrent, mines flat, his one is kinda resessd sits back on its self. looks like a trip down the old breakers yard for that and a inlet manifold and carb, then she can be fired up :twisted:
