Suggestions automatic gearbox knackered.

So it looks like the automatic gearbox on Bens 1.5 GL is on its way out,any knowledgeable peoples come up with the best option

Try and find replaxcement auto box
Re-engine with manual gearbox
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds ok but if we are going to change to manual would change the whole lot engine and box,but thanks for the idea so would a auto box from a gti cabrio be a straight fit into a 1.5 gl ?    anybody please.

Why swop the whole engine just to go to a manual box?

Hes not 100% happy with the engine,so if hes going to do the job may aswell do it all in one go,that was the thinking

Thing is your going from a known good engine to an unknown one

He's virtually gotta take the engine out to do gearbox lol. 

Now would be the time to change it. To do box, you only need the 5speed linkage, tower, bracket on steering rack, box, clutch, and cable. (I think) I've got most of this as I'm removing my whole box for 02a setup…

GTis never came with auto. However, any Mk1 or Mk2 Golf/Jetta auto box should fit, so I'd look for an auto box or someone breaking one of the above cars.

There's a lot of parts to change for a manual conversion, so its probably not cost effective.

Thats what I was thinking,its not quite so straight forward,the reason I ask about which autobox is there are a couple for sale ,but they are advertised as coming from a gti cabby ?

Removed the gearbox and found some sheared bolts…guessed this aint right….there is a plate between the auto-box and engine that has been damaged could anybody tell me the name of this plate or better still give me a part number for it,cant seem to turn up any info in the search function.

Re-fitted different gearbox,oil leaking from somewhere and bolts sheared,all disconnected again,can anybody tell me what the damaged plate in the pics is called ?

The GLS came with auto box and power steering (LHD only PAS), and it came with the 1800 k-Jetronic injection engine.
Therefore an automatic 1800gti cabriolet (aka 155 in Europe)
