Hi,
Does anyone know why my car would have such a strong exhaust gas smell. The smell is really strong if your outside the car when it is ticking over or if you pull up somewhere and put the window down you can smell it straight away, I don't remember it been like this before. Hope this is in the correct section.
Thanks

Out of its tailpipe or in the cabin/front end?

Fuel mixture out, running to rich, air filter old or dirty.
Exhaust sytem leaking.
Check the colour of your spark plugs.

Fuel mixture / running rich might be worth looking into. Air filter is fine and the exhaust system isn't leaking. Will also check the spark plug colour

Tail pipe extension too short at the rear silencer.
Cars rear Hatch seal not tightly sealing.
Along with the short tail pipe extension causes fumes to enter cabin.
Holed Exhaust.
Now running rich is another issue.
Most of mine are white with NGK lettering

Exhaust gasses into the cabin is separate issue I'm having when driving with a open window. To try and solve this I have already extended the tailpipe, fitted a new tailgate seal and adjusted the tailgate, still get exhaust gas into the cabin.
However this post is about a strong exhaust gas smell outside the car if that make sense

Because the smell is so strong I'm thinking that might be why the smell is so evident when the window is open. My main aim is to stop the smell when a wide winow is open as its really unpleasant. I was thinking that maybe the widow down when driving causes a vacuum sucking the gasses into the cabin but it also happens when not moving so im running out of ideas now
