strange light rattling from front drivers side

after my trip to dubs in the park my car has devoloped a small light rattle in the drivers front end, it only rattles when i hit some uneven small pot holes or general tiny bumps in a row, taken it to a mechanic today the suspension wheels and brakes are fine, the bloke was scratching his head lol is there any other options, loose parts, loose covers, have checked under the bonnet everything seems ok nothing loose apart from the top cam cover slightly, but the rattling sounds more metalic than plastic tapping, maybe a stone trapped somewhere??? any idea's??

I had this, drove me crazy. eventually sourced the problem, its the spoiler on my gti wiper arm
another rattle i had was due to a loose grille clip.

Hello my name is John and I'm a dub addict.

Had same problem on my BMW….truned out to be the clip had broken that held the brake pads in place….they would therefore chatter!

Happened only when going over small lumps and bumps in the road…we checked everywhere, before finding the problem

Hope this helps?

Cheers

Hey there,

Did you ever find the source of your rattle?  I've got a really annoying matallic rattle that disappears under braking.  Cant find the source anywhere.  Pads if held in and all seems fine

mine rattles like crazy from the front end, its taken me ages to find the bloody thing and tonight it turned out to be the brake spring clip being worn.  Need to replace the brakes anyway so a good excuse to get down and dirty (the missus is getting jealous   )

Give your front tyre a kick if it rattles slightly its that

Basica test to see if retain clips on caliper, is simply get to normal speed 30mph,  go over small bump etc and if rattles possible chance it is clip.
BUT pick up same speed again and go over same bump again but this time braking as you go over, if no noise defo the clips as they lose the strength over time and become relaxed to say the least lol thus no tension

Yep, it is the pads.  Had a proper look this evening and the inner pad is loose.  I'm new to MK1's so not sure what I need to get.  Would this be something GSF would stock?

Is this what I am after?

They are for mk1 from 74 to 81, if you have for say late 82 83 onwards they are different bud, same ones as on mk2 golf also.
The ones you want if you have basically series 2 mk1 registered late 82 onwards the clips for them are slighty smaller thinner ones.
Halfrauds stocks them, GSF & Eurocarparts.
Whilst your changing over clips, remove pads, clean any dirt etc off the carrier where the pads move along, apply fresh copper grease.

Thanks Pete, I have a '92 clipper so very late..  I'll pop over to GSF on the weekend as they're round the corner and Halfrauds are also close by as a last resort..  Hope this will sort it out as the rattle drives me insane!

Cheers

They look like this bud.

The pic with circle on it i show which way the clips go on the carrier.
So looking at the carrier from sideview i.e you see the 4 nut holes on the hub for the wheel to be attached, these are the outer edge of carrier, the circle is showing the clip with corner to it, this end goes on the outer edge of carrier so you fit them correctly bud.
Thats it.
To make it easier, apply some copper grease on teh rails where the clips will sit, then put the clips on, then the pads and lastly fit on brake caliper

That did the trick  :) Rattle has gone now thanks peeps.  I've not changed the springs on the nearside yet as these werent making a noise and my hands need time to repair from the knuckle damage! it would seem as though the bolts had either notbeen touched for a while or the last person to dismantle the brakes kindly used an air gun on them!!
