Split gator but what is it????? pics included

Hope you guys can help, not really mechanically minded but nosing around the engine bay today i noticed a split gator , what is it and is it a major job? Thanks alot

looks like a steering rack shaft to me matey!

column to rack gator. has a universal joint inside it.

Yes, Steering rack gator, a swine and fiddly, thou if you have access to a set of ramps will make much easier.

Thanks very much for everyones answers , is it ok to drive like that and is it something that needs to be done soon rather than later?

Do asap as mositure will get in then will cause you further problems, for sake of a ?3 part not worth the hassle to leave it bud
