Smoking Problem - Advice Needed

Next problem…
1.6 carb engine 1985 with 133k on clock (genuine).
Starts fine first turn of engine from hot or cold. No smoke at all from exhaust.
On driving then starts smoking on acceleration (light pull off) and when you rev engine. Difficult to tell exact colour of smoke but it's bluish.
Garage I've taken it to for the core plugs just suggest valve stem oil seals but I'm not too sure how they arrived at this. Is there a test you could do? I don't want to have the head off to have this done if it's not the cause.
Now I've also read rubjonney's how to on the carb rebuild and it suggests something in the manifold which could cause similar symptoms. The idle also sits at 1500 when warm and smoking.

Valve stem seals usually leak overnight or when engine is left and give a puff of smoke on start up.
If you're not getting this I'd first look at the breather system and see if it's pulling any oil through the carb.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. This is what I'm worried about, the garage just wants to do the seals without any real proof this is the cause of the smoking.
There is no smoke on start up to really speak of even when you rev it quite hard. On my last drive it didn't start smoking until a good few minutes into the journey and then only when pulling off. Revving it then also got it smoking. It smokes quite a lot. On the drive before iput it away I got the wife to rev it with me behind it. Looked blue and smelt of burnt oil rather than of fumes.
So far I will be doing the carb/coolant channel as suggested by rubjonny and the breather pipes suggested by jayc. Which breather pipes should I be checking? I've currently got the rocker cover off as this was leaking. You can blow through the hose that attaches to the rocker cover as well as into the rocker cover.
Any special tools or tips on getting the inlet manifold off?
Should I be doing anything else?

inlet is a git, use long thin allen bits on extensions and get yourself a small mirror to help you find the bolts! be sure the tool is fully tapped in before you put any torque on it
