Turn on the ignition and connect the battery straight to the starter with a thick wire, if the starter is ok it will start and you should look to the ignition switch.

If nothing happens probably starter at fault.

How do I find the switch? Trying to find the starter it's hiding its self quite well !!

Ignition switch is in the steering column screwed to the back of the barrel the key fits in.

The starter motor is on the right as you look into the engine bay, follow the thick wire from the batter + if you are unsure.

What you would do is put the key in the ignition turn it to the second notch so the dash lights come on, then take a good thick wire or jumper cable attach it to the batter + then touch the starter terminal with the other end.

All being well it should start the car. You may need a helper I'm not sure if you have to press the brake or anything to allow a golf auto to start as I've only ever had manuals myself.

If the car starts normally every time you do this then it is not the starter causing the problem, then if I were you I would change the ignition switch as its only £10 ish and not too bad to get out.

Gave the starter a few wacks and got the other half to start it and its started up so a new stater motor I guess! How hard are these to change ??
