depends on the car as to how far the screw should be turned in. should tick over at arond 800-850 from electronic ignition and 900-1000 from contact ignition.

as for setting up the mixture. turn the mixture screw in till the car is just hunting the out till it stops. then set your idle speed.

thanks not sure what ignition mine is when you say hunting not horses and hounds?is that when the revs drop and then increase i had a go tonight at setting it up but think i still have a air leak or another problem as shes all over the place hc hydrocarbon which is unburnt fuel raises from 120 to over 250 and the co measures from 150 to 450 totally inacurate and hard to set it up almost imposible so going to investigate the problem i have further till ive exhausted every possible sollution :banghead: feel like banging my head on the bonnet but of coarsei wuldnt do that to a mk1 id use a wall

hunting is when the engine starts to pulse a drop then a rise in revs.
pul the dizzy cap off and have a look under the rotor arm if you have a set of points its non electric or points ignition if you dont you have breakerless ignition. (hint the points are under the white cover) if it's on points these need replacing. change the condenser while your at it. check the oil breather pipe isn't blocked and check your timing. then set the carb up.

Has it got the correct jets & emulsion tubes? I changed mine in the DMTL when I went from 1595cc to 1781cc. Idle and CO always need to be adjusted

a good starting point for jetting up for a standard 1800 motor is

main jets primary:117 secondary:127
air corrector jet: primary:145 secondary:200
emulsion tubes: primary:f30 secondary:f33
idle jets: primary:55 secondary:60
pump jet:45
needle valve:175

condensor is the small cylinder attached to the side of the dizzy. to remove it
take the dizzy cap off.
remove the rotor arm (make sure to put it back the same way it should only fit one way)
lift off the dust cover
you may have to remove the bearing plate but that depends on which dizzy you have.

now you can see the points.
on unplug the wire you can see that has a spade conector on it.
undo the screw on the side of the dizzy that holds the condensor on and remove.

easy test is
remove dizzy cap so you can access the points.
stick the car in gear and rock the car till the points are closed (touching)
turn on the ignition and seperate the points with a screwdriver on the lever arm.
if you get a strong blue spark the condensor is dead. a weak spark is perfectly normal.
