Rough running 1.5, Weber - need advice...

Got a problem with rough running/stalling and appreciate any advice:  1.5 GX, running some kind of Weber carb.

She runs fine on the choke and once at temperature idles at 900-1000 with no problems at all. When you push the accelerator really gently, she lifts revs normally.  However when you push the accelerator normally, as you would when pulling away, she cuts revs to the point of almost stalling before it cuts in and drives off.

Additional to this, when going up steep inclines she need masses of revs or loses all power, stalls.  Then you need a combo of full choke and serious revs to get her going again.  Or if you can push her round so she's facing down again! Confused…

So far I've:

changed the inline filter, the old one had some crud in, but not a lot
removed, stripped and fully cleaned the carb - which was okay
replaced points, plugs, condenser

That's as far as my knowledge goes, so I've got her booked into my local friendly mechanic next week (he's not a VW/Goof specialist though… and wanted to give him some pointers on where to look…even the simplest advice would be helpful.

Thanks in advance…or if any Londoners fancied coming round to have a look I can pay in tea and beer :)

carb

its usually the diaghphram on these cost about £10 for a genuine weber 1. i did mine other week. follow accelerator arm back n youll see a little lever its just 4 screws to remove it, you can test it by reving it a few times usually fuel poors out of back if its split, or other wise its prob ur timing thats out, watch u dont loose the spring if u do it urself, easy job if u take carb off engine. if u look 4 webcom on internet think there down south.

I had varying things with mine which I'll list (in no particular order)

  1. Piece of gasket poking into throttle body
  2. Corrosion in accelerator pump/jet
  3. Snapped a bolt, no wait that was my fault.. *ahem*
  4. Incorrectly set idle screw
  5. Damage/slightly split brake servo hose doodad (from manifold)
  6. Badly gapped points
  7. And in the end I advanced the timing slightly, about 2-3mm.

oh yeah and the choke was incorrectly functioning due to it being bent, also the accelerator cable return spring was applying pressure at fully closed throttle, which was unnecersery.

RUST fella
Check your filler neck by removing cap, look through and you should see holes just around where the pipe bends downwards and  check tank by removing sender from underneath rear bench as i feeling your filter on end of sender is blocking as rust moving about
99% sure your problem bud

thanks all, lots to check for then, this could get pricey :(
All the carb gaskets etc looked okay, looked at timing and points gap too, all seemed okay.

@ Pedders - I heard that off another forum too actually - but couldn't get the sender unit off.  Is there a knack to it?
Filler neck itself  is rust-free, but it looks fairly new, so I suspect it's been replaced in the last few years…

and if it is rust inside, then what's the cure - new tank?

If been replaced, has the tank had the rust removed form it also, has the vapour seprator at front of block been replaced as that will collect the rust particals and cause blockages, also has the carb been cleaned?
To remove rust from tank, get a magnet on a piece of wire or the like and gently lower and move it about on the bottom of tank.
Here's how to get into tank

thanks pedders, that's super helpful, especially your linked thread on removal of sender unit  :D

I foresee myself driving (roughly) round and round my block to run her out of the £5 petrol I put in last week before attempting this though!

To reassure you if 1st time, i had 1/4 tank left in, i opened all windows doors etc, disconnected battery and slowing moved magnet around in other members car in order to collect teh rust, when you use the magnet, it does not have to make contact with teh floor base of tank as the rust will simply jump onto the magnet.

Can someone tell me (or show me a pic) of where this is?

Have completely stripped carb, cleaned it. Nee points, plugs, fuel filter.  Taken fuel sender unit out and cleaned filter on the end of it, looked around in tank, didn;t look too bad, dragged a magnet around inside.  Some small particles of rust yep but nothing big.

Am at the end of my tether now, haven't had her running properly since December

I'm prepared to pay someone to sort this, but the mechanic I took it to just said 'she's 20 years old, of course it'll run rough' :banghead: Then i told him the engine's only got 2,000 mile son it.  Eedjit.  Does anyone know a SW London golf-friendly place/person?

im having the same probs, going to put an airline on the fuel pipes at the weekend to blow them out, really odd problem and it happens at totally random times, the engine runs so sweet,  only something small and silly but christ is it annoying, makes you look daft going to the garage and saying it keeps cutting out, then it sits there and runs fine for an hour while they are watching it, it def seems to be under acceleration and not idle, so has to be some crud pushing into the jets and then it coughs to clear it
