What engine do you have? On an 1800, the timing belt cover is in two pieces at the top. Once you have undone the two clips holding the two halves together, the outer part of the cover can be lifted away (it slots into the lower half). The inner half of the timing belt cover is held on by two of the rocker cover bolts.

It should come away easily now, in fact I'm not sure if you have to actually remove the outer cover, it's probably OK just to unclip it and move it out of the way.

cover has to come off. depended on age of car it will be 1 or 2 peices (i'd have thought 2 peice as they are more common)
2 peices is easy. there is a allan head screw about 8 inchs down the cover that needs to be removed then lift it off easy. dont have to touch the cam belt or adjust anything but while you've got it off best check your cam belt.

post some pics sure we can help.

The 2 pieces came on later versions of mk1's, cabby's same as the mk2, 2 retaining clips that clip over the cambelt, very good idea as easier, but a cheaper feel i feel, whereas on tintop mk1's it is a metal cambelt cover, awkward to remove at 1st but like novacaine states undo the hex nut at the side, undo the 2 rocker screws that hold it down also, then lift cambelt cover from the bottom part of it where it meets the lower part of cover and lift to your left and then lift up bud.
When you remove it put back in reverse, you will see that the lower part of cover has a groove in order the cover to sit flush with the lower cover.Don't worry about cambelt, you wont do anything atall to change it, but good chance to view it, but also if it has not had a change in past 30-40,000 mile, get it changed.
Any problems or pics need, let us know
