Replacing a Pierburg carb with manual weber

I'm thinking of changing the carb (pierburg auto choke 1457cc auto) on my cabrio since it won't start in the cold (and I live in Scotland) plus it's always been a bit of bother.
Questions

What do I change to?
What should I pay new/2nd hand?
How hard is it to do yourself?
Is there anyway to service/overhaul the Pierburg before splashing the cash?
cheers

Ebay is a good place to look for the carb, just make sure you DEFO get all the brackets and the manual choke cable assembly, plus a weber service kit, basically new gaskets etc (also from ebay, just do a search for them) also make sure the weber is jetted correctly for your engine ie for a 1.6 or a 1.8 as the jets are different sizes !

Also search on here for help

Plus fit a new inlet manifold rubber flange as you defo dont want any new air leaks.
I'm also fitting a new accelerator cable at the same time.
hope that helps !

Just swapped the carb on my 1457cc  for a weber and its fab the car runs much better and now starts ever time. You can get a refurb kit for your old carb I tried this 1st and it worked ok but got offered a webber for a good price so had it. google townend garage in Leeds I got the refurb kit from them think it was about 20 quid!  They will post it for you aswell.

cheers mate.
I had the carb off and cleaned it up and checked all the hoses. It seems OK. Might try the service kit though. For that price you can't loose.
I put it all back together and hey presto it ran. Today no start. I think I might have the leads in the wrong order as well.

there's a guy on ebay selling carburettors for manual and automatic golfs. You'd have to know exactly which you need. ie 2b2, 1b3 and state engine size.
search for carbs you'll find his shop

ive checked out the golf and found that there is no hot air return where exactly does it go from, know that it connects to the air filter but it looks like there was some pipe on b4 does it go to the exhaust thanks,
also on the weber there seems to be a little rod that isnt connected to anything and when you press it in it stalls the car is this the problem why my cars cutting out when i let the revs die down?????

Will have to get some more pics up as there is a metal plate/cover that sits to the left of the carb on the exhaust manifold which is what the metal/aluminium hose attaches to from the air box ( hope that makes sense) So when the carb needs warm air to stop it freezing over this is where its taken from !

As for the Little Rod im not sure what you mean soz post a pic of it if you can ?? cheers

Some pics for you of my carb, still fitting it lol

This one below shows how i've just re-joined the coolant hose's together on the in-let manifold, as the weber doesnt need coolant for its choke as it has the manual one!

Think that means you just have a different inlet manifold thats all ! If you look at that pic again inbetween my fore finger and the l/h side of the block you can just see the top of the metal cover that the metal hose attaches to from the air filter/box that i mentioned in my previous post !  Think that link rod on the left is for the over run on the accelerator ie when you fully press the accelerator down it opens and thus adds more fuel to the carb so when you press it by hand you might just be flooding the carb, hence it stalls, have you the correct size jets for the engine as 1.6 and 1.8 engines require different sized jets to be fitted in the carb, just a thought ? No probs dude glad/hope it helps !!
