Problems!

Right, here goes…. been having on going problems with the car for a couple of weeks now and running out of ideas! Wondering if I posted the symtoms up you guys may be able to give me some Ideas of potenial problems…  :dontknow:

Firstly, power seems to be getting drained from the battery even when the car is stood (In the garage) meaning the car just wont start alot of the time… I have put a new battery in it…. other possible causes, Alternator, starter motor?  :dontknow:

Secondly, when driving along the car will start to 'kangaroo' if you will… or 'Missing'. What i have do if this happens is drop it down a gear and put my foot down abit and eventually it will stop and be fine from there on. This has become increasingly worse and now the car, so bad infact that I cant drive it at all. Also rather than ticking over while stationary has started to cut out… The 2 problems Possibly linked?… Im not sure.

My thourghts on this are maybe a blockage somwhere?… Carb? Fuel lines? somthing to do with the air filter? (Which i recently replaced)  :dontknow:

Now im not the most mechaniclly minded guy in the world (eager to lean tho!) so it is all abit lost on me. No doubt will end up at a garge to sort it but just after any help ….

Cheers ~

battery. have you put a new stereo in? or any other electronic item?

sounds like you might have a fuel blockage or rust in your tank. wouldn't have thought air filter.

you can also check your enrichment tube which is on top of the carb is in the right place it may have been bent at some point.

carb should be clear as idle and main jets are 2 different things so should be before the carb unless you have a hole on the inlet manifold (normally on the gasket)

pull the plugs and see what colour they are. black and sooty running rich
white why to lean
brown/tan just right

Cheers for the reply yet again mate.

Yeah I up a new stereo in it a while back and if Im honest that is when The problems with the battery started. I wouln't have thourght the amount of power that uses (only has a small red light on when the car isn't running) would have that much effect? :dontknow:

I will have a look at the things you have mentioned, come to think of it I spotted a slight split in my inlet pipe the other day but assumed that had always been there so didn't think that would have had much to do with the problem… (that the pipe that is open at 1 end, at brings air in, yeah?   )

Possible rust in the tank? How would I know, whats the cure?

When you say plugs  do you mean spark plugs? and do you mean if White they need a clean, rather than 'lean'?

Again, sorry for my stupidness.

stereo may be dragging the power down for other reasons than the red flashing light i'e the pre amp may be staying on or something which will draw enough to flatten the battery over time.
enrichment tube is on top of the carb when you take the air box off (the whole lot so you can see the top of the carb) not the pipe that the air drews though thats just to direct the air in so a split here makes no difference.
by plugs i mean spark plugs and i did mean lean as in "the car is running lean" i.e not rich.

rust in tank
what most people do is lif tthe rear seat and take the black metal plate with the 3 screws in out. under here is the return line and fuel level sender. take this out (be careful not to snap the lugs) i think it twists out from what i remember then have a look in the tank it helps if your tank is empty so you can see (don't use a match for a light  )you can clean most of it out with a big magnet. while your at it check the in tank filter which is a gauze over the fuel line.
