pre heater

hi .i could do with abit of  advise on 1.8 clipper carb. need to know abit about the pre heater.
1.is the pre heater switch the one on the side of the air box that two pipes go to?
2.is the actual pre heater the thing at the end of the airbox inlet pipe that opens and closes to let hot air from exhaust when cold, and cold air from front of car when hot?
IF I BYPASS THE SWITCH BY CONNECTING THE TWO PIPES, WILL THIS LET COLD OR HOT AIR IN?
