possible faulty Coolant Temperature sender?

Hi
We have a MK1 Clipper Cabriolet, and it idles fast when started, and continues to do it when warm. If we then stop the car and re-start it, it seems to idle fine. The car however, stinks of fuel. Its a carb model, with the dreaded Pierburg 2E2, and while I know loads of people will just say 'Swap for a Weber', I'm wondering if its the coolant temperature sender at fault, rather than, say, a sticky Choke.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Phil

Anyone know where exactly the coolant temperature sender is on an EX engine, '89 Clipper cabrio?
I've got a Haynes manual, but its not being very helpful in showing exactly where it is.

if its the 1800 carb its on front of the engine there are two plugs on a coolant hose the front one is the temp gauge i think back one is to do with the carb

there is no coolant temp sensor for the carb, only 2 thermoswitches. have you read my 2e2 faq yet?
