please help with advice

Ok,,this is getting frustrating,this is my problem?.
When I drive my car just switches off, and I have to bring the car to a complete stop and than start it up again and it goes fine afterwards. Sometimes the car goes fine for about a month and than all of a sudden it starts switching of again.Whats been happening lately is that I hear gunshots sound coming from my exhaust and than it switches off?I took it to a mechanic and he checked the fuel pump and fuel filter and the carburatter and he said that it fine..what else could be the problem, I don?t know what to do , please help me with advice.Its been happening for the last 2 years now.I have a golf1 99 model carburatter 1.6 :cry:  :cry:  :cry:

You might possibly have an intermitant ignition fault

Look at changing the electronic parts including the distributor [you could of course get these from a brakers yard] As the fuel system has been checked thsi is the next logical step . Intermitant problems like this are a pain but easily sorted using the one for one substitution method
