Overheating clipper

Hi guys i know this subject has probably been covered 100's of times in the past but i'm getting desperate.

I've changed oil, coolant, stat and just ordered new expansion tank cap and gonna rad flush this weekend.

My golf always runs up to about 3/4's on the temp guage and never comes down. The fan cuts in and out quite abit too.

Also when i shut the engine off i hear a hissing sound almost like pressure escaping could the coolant be boiling up? i hear this noise from carb/inlet area.

I had major problems in the past with my pierburg auto chock and upgraded to a weber which has been great.

I had been told that the o ring in the inlet manifold that used to feed the auto choke could be perished and causing my problems??

cheers any help much appreciated

Could be loads of things mate. Does it ever overheat and have you noticed bubbles in the expansion tank?

If you're flushing the system again unless you have a top fill rad you have to be careful you don't get an air lock. Its easy done. Don't forget to check the hose at the bottom of the rad to make sure it;'s getting hot too, not as hot as the top hose but it should be hot, if it's not they you have an  air lock.

Lastly has it always been like this or is it a new development? If it's new it could be as a result of something you may have done.

it's ran hot ever since i've had it  and i thought everythong i've fixed would have sorted it, howver it is slightly better i class it as overheating constantly but never cuts out or anything.
where is the normal operating temperature ive been told half way.

The rad pipes all get hot and the bottom is marginally cooler but not much, would that rule out stat??

what about hissing from top end of engine could that be pressure escaping from head gasket, i have no white in my oil tho?

cheers for your help

Have you checked all the breather hoses for leaks?

Does the engine hunt at all?

no not tried that will have a check for any leaks later - how do you mean hunt??

It does go from around 800rpm to 1200-1300 rpm when is hot….

Root cause is probably that the engine is sitting on the lean side - air leaks will cause this.

Sounds like the cooling system is doing its job and cooling the (too hot) engine, with the temp gauge going to 3/4 and the fan working etc. Hissing? So long as its not an actual coolant leak or a leak from the expansion tank cap, safe to ignore.

Revs drop when it's warmed up like it wants to stall but it doesn't actually drop right off, the rev needle just bobs up and down.

nope not noticed it doing that - im hoping its just a blockage somewhere and something more sinister fingers crossed

You'll only notice revs dropping when you approach a lean (or rich) misfire limit. So its not an accurate way to find the problem.

Try running it without the stat, that way you can eliminate that part to begin with.

will it not just run cooler without stat anyway??

That's what we need to see, if it doesn't then you need to look elsewhere like for a blockage.

ah i see thanks for that!!

ok so today i have tested the new thermostat that was fitted a couple of months back and yes you've guessed it, faulty!!

So i have fitted new thermostat, drained the coolant and rad flushed and replaced coolant with the lovely pink stuff from vw. I checked all hose connections and the return from the radiator to expansion tank was nipped up by a cable tie, sorted that out.

Been for a little country drive and its not running as hot and it doesn't smell hot, it sits a little below the 3/4 mark and the fan hardly cuts in, but it does work i ckecked. Does this sound about right temperature guys, only things left to do is new rad and or water pump or would that be a waste of time………..

Thanks for all your input!!!!!!!!!!!!
