ok guys, whats the best engine to go for?

I'm just gearing up for the winter and getting the car right for the show season next year, everything is sorted apart from the lump, and being an 1100 formel e it runs like a bag of old shite and has 0 power. I'm not complaining as i havent so much as changed the oil since i had it, as i figured the engine would be out as soon as funds allow. I need an engine that will provide anough poke to keep the petrol head in me happy, enough economy and reliability for a daily driver and not blow the budget for insurance or conversion….

i'm going round in circles from putting bike carbs on the 1100 to a full on VR6 or 1.8T, just can't focus.

how big does it need to be? This is my first golf and the only engines I've ever swapped have been aircooled, which i know is a whole different ball game. i would like to change the brakes and servo to compensate, but i would rather not have to rebuild the engine from scratch…

do you want to weld in new engine mounts, or do you want to use the same mounts?
