Oil Pressure Light Flashing

Hi all,

I've just bought my first GTi convertible (1985) and drove it back last night. The oil pressure light (red one with the oil can logo - I assume it's the oil pressure light) is constantly flashing. I've checked the oil levels and they're fine, is there a likely cause of the problem other than oil pump failure?

I've got no manuals for it and have ordered a Haynes manual, are there any other manuals that people recommend? Also, is there a recommended place to get them, I'd like to get an owners manual.

Many thanks  :D ,

Rich.

Thanks for that. There isn't a buzzer sounding, just the light flashing constantly on and off rapidly. I'll check the sensor and see if it is that that's bust. Cheers.

it's a feature. they all do it.

theres a short in the wire normally. i've still not traced mine though. it's been doing it for about 5 years.
keep an eye on your oil levels.

rumour has it from anouther member that it might also be a short on the board on the back of the clocks. i've not looked into that yet but it's beleivable.

After extensive research and time spent with a multimeter I beleiv the faults lies with gremlins that hide in the dashboard. On disturbing said gremlins that fault will disapear but the gremlins themselves having the power of invisibility are hard to remove.

I have also investigated this common phenomenon after I wasted much time and money with those 'ghost busters' to no avail - silly buggers. I can now confidently say it is either…

A) Magic smoke dragon has died - yes the one that creates all the magic smoke inside all your electrical components. Think Crazy Quiff sells these for about £6,000,000 but you have to fit it yourself.
B) The existence of another component is directly affecting the behaviour of the flashing light, being: The nose on your face. Direct extract from the Haynes Manual 1974-1984 Mk1 Golf /Jetta: "as long as you have a nose on your face the light will flash"

Hope that helps,
oh ive got the flashing light too btw.

look at the sensor on the side of the head, this one is responsible for flashing the light at idle. try earthing the wire to the head, if that stops it replace the sensor. obviously if its leaking oil then replace it also, just make sure its the right one. MK1s use a blue or brown sensor here :)
