Oil cooler MK1 GTI

I have a question about the oil cooler. I thought that every MK1 GTI had an oil cooler. But I heared that the 1600 GTI has not got an oil cooler. Is this true?

I'm sure all GTI's had oil coolers fitted as standard. And I'm pretty sure my a.6GTI had one on it in the same place as the 1.8GTI has one.
