no spark from coil

my car was sat running on idle when it spluttered a bit then cut out, from then on it wont start. i found out there was no spark coming from the coil, so i got a new coil and it still isnt sparking, any ideas? obviously everyone will be thinking its something before that. but why would it splutter then cut out while running.. any help would be much appreciated
