New Carburettor for 1.8 Clipper manual

Hello, The carb on my 1.8 clipper manual (with original factory carb) is starting to give problems with the fast idle when the choke is on and seems to have a few flat spots appearing in the performance. From reading different parts of this forum and an internet search these carbs seem to give bother as they get older and can be a right pain. Does anyone know where I can get a new carburettor from, I have tried VW and they say they are no longer available. Cheers

You can get refurb pierburg 2e2 carbs i.e same typeas what you have now on ebay, not sureif someone on here refurbs them, you can always ask.
Or common carb replacement is the weber 32/34dtml manual choke carb for approx £220

Thank you for your replies, I don't want to have a different carb fitted from standard as I have read the standard VW one is much better than the weber conversion and I really don't want to have a hole cut in the dash or modified for a choke cable! I will take a printout of your excellent carb article rubjonny to my local VW dealer Listers and see if they can change this part, it is due for a service this month anyway and they can hopefully do it at the same time. Many thanks again.

if you're lucky the'll still have one of the older boys working there who knows a bit about these carbs. otherwise i wouldnt hold my breath :(
if i was local i would come have a look at it for you!

the good news tho is at least if webber your only option, there is a choke cable hole in the dash as standard, its behind that plastic square plate bolted to dash near the steering wheel :)

but yeah in your shoes i would rather get it fixed, the 2e2 is an excelent carb when it works.
the haynes carb manual is also very good, i have a small section of it for the 2e2 but its not 100% complete:

Hello again, picked up my car from the VW dealer on Friday, they serviced it, brake fluid change etc and replaced the o ring as described in this forum and everything is back to normal, idles at 2000rpm for 30 secs or so and then drops to 1300rpm and when warm to 900rpm. Great stuff so a big thank you for the information in this article and to the local VW agent for fixing the problem.

could I ask how much it cost to replace the o ring please?

The o ring you get from gsf for maybe £1, you might aswell get a new inlet gasket.
Just a case of removing inlet manifold bolts using a mirror and right tools inc a long exstentsion for the 2 inner bolts.
Remove old oring, clean the surface of any limescale etc so new one sits flush, refit manifold job done.
Approx 45 minute job
Shame you far away, i would have honestly done it for you

deffo get a new inlet gasket, it'll almost certainly fall apart when you try to remove.
main worry with this job is if the o'ring has broken up, if so bits of it will be lodged into your inlet which will prevent coolant flow even if you replace the inlet. some poor bloke on clubgti had to take his inlet off 4 times before he managed to flush out a chunk of rubber and finally solve the issue.  every time he blasted it with a hose it would move the oring somewhere and allow coolant flow, then as soon as he refitted it would move back and block it again!
