New and opinions needed

Hello all, only just joined the site, think this will be the first of many posts for me, not all questions tho!. Got myself a 82 golf gl 1.5, as with most first impressions looked good but then the big can of worms came out!. Here goes…The 1.5 engine isnt running and by the looks of it will take a bit to sort out properly, it also has the standard 4 speed box on it. My question is; I can get a my hands on a 1.8 gl mk2 golf engine very easily, it is also a carb engine, will this fit straight in? and what type of 5 speed gear box would git it? sorry I havnt got the engine code but can get it next time I'm up where its stored. Hope this is clear enough any reply would be great, best regards Isaac

1'8 should drop straight in.
are you sure it's a 4 speed box?
if you do change the box the 5 speed from a mk2 will fit (think it's 020) but you'll need to get a 5 speed linkage.

I'm sure its a 4 speed box on it at the mo, should be able to get hold of a 5 speed linkage quite easily (have the car with the 1.8 engine next to my golf!) so can have that one…sorted!, as for the box is the 020 box the only compatable one or are there any others? just might help getting hold of one!, thanks for you reply/time mate, isaac

mk1 linkage is different to mk2 mate. so you'll need it off a mk1.
as to other boxes i'm not sure on the codes. ask in the running gear section and you'll no dowt get a better response.
