My Poor Car Needs Help

I have a problem with the Golf Mk1 and need some advice. The car has run like a dream for the last god knows how long and then had an idling fault. This was corrected after a tune up and changing the whole electrical side of the car, plugs, points, etc. I now have the same problem and the idling is rubbish and more to the point when the car has run for some time the car then comes to a sudden stop. This is not over heating and no way in my mind is electrical but is acting like the spark is non existant. I am about to change the petrol filter as well but it is like the car has just run out of juice and grinds to a stop. Can this be the carb ?? . All the parts are original and i am now thinking that after 24yrs the barb may of given up. Both the garage and the specialist tuning centre indicated it was on the way out. Any advice on other areas before i invest my hard earned cash????
Email me please to spudulike1066@hotmail.com
Thanks and happy driving

before junking the carb get a rebuild kit as they are much cheaper and will sort alot of problems.  If you have throttle spindle wear the carb is shot though as it will suck in air around the spindle causing a weak mixture at idle.

Check your fuel filler neck at the top - Can rust through allowing road grime into the tank, causing dirty/gritty/rusty petrol. Will block fuel filters and carb jets etc…

Also, Underneath the carb there is a rubber mount. These are prone to splitting, causing an air leak. Have a look with a torch and pull the carb back and forth - You'll see the split if there is one…
