if its still the standard airbox then is there a pipe to the exhaust manifold on it?
if yes is the flap working to change over from cold air to warm?
is the vacuum system working? (this is needed to open the flap and is often ignored when a carb gets changed)
other than that check you have fuel when it dies (look in the filter)
you may have a blocked fuel line.

Hi guys please im in need of some help i have a 1989 1.8 golf clipper ive had for some time now and have just had a webber converson put on it as the original one was shot to bits.I had it tuned BUT its still not right this may silly but i love my car and i want to keep her running she a jem only 100000 and spot less. The webber is brand new but its seem to chocke up ill be on a run and it holds back on me then cuts out not funny …now then when you try to start her nothing 5 mins later she starts but it miss fires cuts out . then if u leave her for 10mins its fine again i want to scream at it but wat good will it do im at a loss so im hopeing u guys can help me keep my baby on the road
If it is carb icing, the car will lose power and hold back as you say, look in rear view mirror when it is doing this, It will blow black smoke from exhaust.
The reason it will start again is the water, moisture droplets created by the cold air will now disappear due to warm of engine.
But continue on again and approx 10 mile it will do it again.
Is this happening on normal roads, It is not carb icing as the cold air would not be flowing fast enough to remove completely warm air from even the engine bay area.
This would only happen on motorways etc.
My air filter box does not have the flap of which is operated via vacuum and mine runs sweet as a nut.
The cure is due to design of grill as i have mentioned in previous Carb icing threads, you need to fit a piece of card behind the grill in winter months, This will and does from my experience stops carb icing ever happening as it prevents the really cold air coming from drivers side of grill and shooting up arm of air filter box thus basically supplying water to air and fuel mixture, thus the cut out issue.
If you have had the static and ignition timng done aswell as the co's on carb set right, this is the cure for you, if not have the timing checked bud, also have a look at condition of ht leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm also.
Anyway here is pic of board i put behind my grill, only on drivers side and it stops before the bonnet catch so air is still coming in to the radiator

Took me over 3 years to suss this one out, glad i don't run a garage
The board i used is light but thick and sturdy board i got from a neighbour.
Since i did the mod, 1st trial was going to midlands meet and it was cold, car was perfect there and back, not a single splutter.
Have been on motorways quite some since and very happy to say it has cured the fault.
Thou when better weather appears i will remove it for then
In mornings as it is cold, i leave engine running on manual choke for approx 3 mins approx 800rpm tick over, turn her off, leave for 1 minute, start and she's perfect, but this only when it is really cold

mk2 jobbys are different i think.
i'm going to make a new set from plastic when i get the plastic i need (got to go on a mission to get as it's half way down an embankment at the moment) if i'm happy with them i'll do you a set.

I took my cards off and never re-fitted them, BUT i do remember i did still have this issue with the cards on.
Also suffered this problem with the mk2 of mine which had the plastic carding.
I will leave mine as it is, as it has defo stopped the problem arising
